Three weeks ago I was 21 weeks pregnant with my baby girl. We tried for her, we planned for her, we wanted her. She was sick. My doctors told me we could terminate the pregnancy, or I could wait for her to die, which she would, and see if her death caused me to go in to labor. I CHOSE to end the pregnancy. As much as I wanted my baby girl, she couldn’t live, and I couldn’t let her, or myself suffer. My husband agreed. As did all of my family, physicians, and friends.

Legislation such as this is indiscriminate. It will take choice from those with planned, desired pregnancies that have gone horribly wrong, just as it will take choice from those who have made poor decisions, or have poor situations. It is best to consider all consequences before passing legislation like this.

Women like me, wanting to have a baby- would spend months not planning a nursery, but a funeral. Being a living tomb for their baby, feeling them move and kick in their bellies- knowing it’s just a matter of time before the kicking stops.

It’s not Robert Bentley’s choice to make women, fathers, and infants suffer that way.
